The Therapeutic Microbiology lab, directed by Professor Robert Britton, is investigating the impact of the gut microbiome on infant health. The lab uses animal, organoid, and bioreactor models to understand how gut microbes interact with each other and with their host. This position is responsible for computational analyses, including microbial genomics and metabolic modeling, that improve our understanding of these biological interactions. The ideal candidate has a strong background in bioinformatics and microbiology, and proven ability to answer biological questions while meeting accelerated timelines.
• Design and implement procedures for data management and sharing.
• Prepare high quality documentation and reports.
• Use bioinformatic tools to analyze genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic data sets.
• Interpret biological data using statistics and visualization.
• Design, validate, and execute computational tasks of high complexity.
• Master’s or doctoral degree in the Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, or a related field.
• Strong organizational skills for working collaboratively within a larger research group.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate computational analyses to non-technical stakeholders.
• 2+ years of relevant experience
• Significant experience in microbial genomics, including assembling and annotating genomes, performing whole-genome multiple sequence alignments, building phylogenetic trees, and/or typing bacteria.
• Significant experience in annotating microbial functions, metabolic modeling, and/or flux balance analysis.
• Experience with biological databases and knowledgebases such as KEGG, BioCyc, and/or Reactome.
• Experience with dependency management (conda) and version control (git).
• Experience with high-performance computing (HPC), workflow management systems (Nextflow or snakemake), and/or cloud-based computing.
