BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION FOREMAN
The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Bridge Maintenance has a full-time vacancy for a Bridge Construction Foreman.

Pay Range
Base pay: $22.50/hr - $30.02/hr
Trainee Status (if applicable): $21.63 per hour
Responsibilities
Supervises, trains, and evaluates all bridge construction trades including plan and specification comprehension, layout of project lines and grades, carpentry, welding, concrete placement and forming systems, structural steel erection, structural steel painting, specialized material fabrication, cofferdam construction, Emergency Temporary Bridge erection, and structural steel straightening.
Continuously plans, prioritizes, and directs short and long‑range construction and repair schedules, including preventive maintenance, within a designated area and regularly makes recommendations for resolving bridge related problems.
Supervises and trains subordinates in project safety and personal protection in accordance with federal and state regulations including complex work zone traffic control procedures involving high speed and high‑volume traffic according to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and Department standards. Implements and performs safety and security inspections for heightened monitoring and safety of the State’s infrastructure.
Maintains an emergency ready staff capable of responding to critical unanticipated structural needs. Controls the use, storage, and documentation of hazardous materials and disposal of hazardous waste generated by operations according to state and federal laws. Documents and maintains accurate records of all work schedules, health and safety requirements, and project costs to include labor, materials, and equipment.
Coordinates construction and maintenance operations in wetland areas to comply with permits, applicable laws, and regulations. Inspects various types of bridges and other structures owned by the state or town for damage and establishes priorities for repair of emergency or hazardous conditions.
Measures and calculates weights, volumes, and quantities of various construction materials, schedules on‑time deliveries for projects, supervises incorporation of materials into the work. Utilizes a computerized inventory system and incorporates quantities into a Maintenance Management System. Communicates, verbally and in writing, with various levels of state personnel, the public, and private contractors and establishes contract rental agreements for construction equipment.
Performs and oversees work in full conformance with all risk management, safety, and environmental standards, regulations, and administrative orders.
Minimum Qualifications
Equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in general bridge construction, bridge maintenance, or related field, with at least two years in a position that involved supervising groups in bridge construction and maintenance.
Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License A or B (CDL-A or CDL-B) with tank endorsement and air brakes.
Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
Must receive a negative result on a pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements.
Must have ability to climb and work from scaffolds high above the ground or water.
Must be willing to work throughout the State and during emergencies for long hours, 7 days a week.
Trainee Option
Candidates with an equivalent combination of 3+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in ‘trainee status’ for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of modern methods used in bridge construction and bridge maintenance. Skill in use of bridge construction tools and equipment. Ability to place, layout and supervise workers engaged in bridge work. Ability to work out‑doors for long periods under varying climatic conditions. Able to climb and work from scaffolds high above ground. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with the motoring public as well as landowners along the highway right‑of‑way and employees. Demonstrated agility, mechanical ability, resourcefulness, initiative and sound judgment. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
After‑Hire Requirements
Candidates possessing a valid Operators or CDL-B license must obtain the CDL-A license within 1 year of hire.
Offers of employment are conditional upon the individual obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless the candidate is currently employed by the State of New Hampshire.
