General Purpose of PositionInstalls, maintains and reads meters for city water distribution system and assists with other departmental dutiesMajor Duties and ResponsibilitiesReads the City's water metersLead Meter ReaderWorks with Utility Billing staff to coordinate readings schedulesWalks and drives assigned routesTakes monthly readings for residential, commercial, and City metersOperates hand-held encoders, including re-sequencing when neededDeals with residents and animals en-route as neededAnswers field-related questions from meter readers and the publicCompletes work orders related to utility billing and water serviceDocuments beginning and ending readings on new and closed accountsAdds and removes services for moving residents and businessesLocates water mains and service lines upon requestPrepares identification tags for meter servicesInstalls new meters and other outside reading devicesHangs door notices for service shut-off and shuts off service when necessaryReconnects service when neededAssists with other departmental activitiesInspects water and sewer mainsUses jet truck and sewer camera to diagnose problemsPursues unaccountable losses in distribution systemMaintains and repairs metersRemoves meter when needed and removes collected waterExamines meter to determine if it can be repaired or must be replacedChecks for leaksRepairs meter when possible or makes arrangements for meter to be replacedReplaces metersMakes water tapsObtains appropriate meter to installTakes meter and other necessary equipment to sitePrepares site, makes tap and installs meterChecks for water pressure and accuracy of installationParticipates in public relations and educationCommunicates well with publicHandles customer inquiries effectively and courteouslyMakes appropriate referrals to other City departments when neededPerforms similar duties within the department as assignedAssists other city departments as needed, including snow removal, water and seweremergencies, and parksPerforms other duties as directedEducation and ExperienceThe person in this position must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. The person in this position mshould have three years of related field labor experience; five years of experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.Licenses and CertificationsThe person in this position must have a valid Missouri CDL Class B driver's license and Water DS-IIcertification.
