Job Overview

The Division of Safety and Facilities seeks a Police Dispatcher to manage the operations of the police communications center for the GW Police Department. The dispatcher will maintain and monitor communications with university police officers via radio and telephone, oversee emergency telephone lines and alarm systems, evaluate the severity of transmissions, and dispatch officers and ambulance crews to incidents on and off campus. The role also requires coordination with local district forces, participation in the Campus Crisis Communications Team, monitoring video surveillance, and serving as the primary source of general campus information for the public. The position may call for extended hours during emergencies.

Responsibilities


  • Complete required certifications and ongoing training for all dispatcher duties.
  • Direct calls to appropriate GWPD personnel and dispatch officers to incidents, alarms, requests for assistance, or emergencies on campus.
  • Dispatch campus ambulance crews for medical emergencies occurring on and off campus.
  • Monitor campus facility alarms and the GW Personal Alarm Locator software.
  • Utilize specific law?enforcement systems that require a background check.
  • Maintain and monitor radio and telephone communications with university police officers.
  • Monitor university emergency telephone lines and fire, intrusion, and panic alarms.
  • Evaluate transmission severity and take appropriate action in both emergency and non?emergency situations.
  • Coordinate with local district forces, including the District of Columbia Fire and Police Departments, during emergency situations.
  • Contact members of the Campus Crisis Communications Team when necessary.
  • Monitor the video surveillance system and provide general campus information to the public.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Police Sergeant.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED plus one year of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelors degree or higher in a related field.
  • For a Senior Dispatcher, high school diploma or GED plus three years of relevant professional experience.
  • Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may substitute for the required education.
