The Senior Bioinformatics Scientist will work in a collaborative, cross-functional environment to drive the development of existing and new sequencing technologies. In this role, they will design and implement pipelines for data quality assessment, provide actionable insights from experimental data, and contribute to defining Illumina’s R&D data quality and product strategy. Responsibilities include planning and executing quality assessments for existing and novel sequencing technologies; collaborating with subject matter experts across R&D functions to understand, define, and communicate sequencing technology requirements for research and clinical applications; designing, deploying, and optimizing pipelines for secondary analysis and quality assessment of sequencing data; contributing to the development of automated testing infrastructure; driving the analysis, integration, modeling, and interpretation of experimental data; translating complex analysis results into actionable recommendations for technology development and improvement; and presenting results clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The role requires staying current on the latest publications and relevant research and identifying established methods to incorporate into method development. Requirements include strong understanding of next-generation sequencing technologies and their underlying principles; proficient programming skills in languages such as Python or R; experience with Unix/Linux and High Performance Computing (HPC) environments; proficiency with common bioinformatics algorithms and methods; hands-on experience with quality control and analysis of data from various omics such as WGS, scRNA, somatic profiling, proteomics, methylation; solid understanding of statistical and biological concepts; strong data analysis and visualization skills. Desired qualifications include experience with cloud environments (e.g., AWS), workflow management languages (Nextflow, WDL), containerization tools (Docker), and excellent communication skills. Education required is a Masters/PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, data science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent with typically a minimum of 3 years of related experience with a Master’s degree or 0-3 years with a PhD or equivalent experience. The position is hybrid (#LI-HYBRID).
