Position Overview

The Police Telecommunicator operates radio, telephone, or computer equipment at emergency response centers, receiving reports of crimes, disturbances, fires, and medical emergencies from the public, and relaying this information to law enforcement and emergency response personnel. The role involves maintaining contact with callers until responders arrive.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Question callers to determine locations and nature of problems and establish response priorities
  • Receive and transfer emergency and non?emergency calls for City departments
  • Record details of calls, dispatches, and messages
  • Retrieve information from teletype networks and computerized data systems (e.g., wanted persons, stolen property)
  • Maintain security of highly sensitive materials
  • Scan status charts and computer screens to determine available emergency units
  • Observe residential and commercial alarm registers
  • Scan maps to confirm dispatch service area
  • Access personnel rosters and emergency call?out files for dispatching information
  • Learn required material and pass certification tests
  • Interpret small?scale maps to provide directions
  • Refer calls that do not require dispatch to appropriate departments or agencies
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Sheriffs Standards Telecommunicator Certification (must be completed within one year from appointment)
  • U.S. citizen


Preferred Qualifications
  • Equivalent to one year of police communications dispatching experience
  • Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Drivers License


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and quality standards
  • Knowledge of telecommunications system operations and control
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, and procedures for security operations
  • Proficient English language skills (writing and speaking)
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures
  • Ability to listen to and understand spoken information
  • Ability to monitor multiple radio talk groups simultaneously
  • Ability to detect differences in pitch and loudness
  • Ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken language
  • Memory for words, numbers, pictures, and procedures


Physical and Sensory Requirements
  • Remain stationary, sitting, or standing for prolonged periods
  • Occasional movement throughout the workday
  • Communicate verbally and in writing
  • Repeat motions of holding, grasping, turning (including wrist, hands, fingers)
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds
  • Work primarily in an office environment; operate computers, copiers, fax machines, and phones
  • Concentrated use of visual and auditory senses for data entry and proofreading
  • Manage frequent interruptions and occasional stress or fatigue



Working Conditions

Work is performed in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions and frequent computer screen usage.

Final candidates must pass background checks, a pre?employment drug screening, physical examination, and any required skills tests. Background checks will include reference, social security, education, criminal record, credit history, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle records, in compliance with federal and state statutes.
